The Advent Basilica Christmas market at St. Stephen's Square (Szent István tér) has been voted Europe's best Christmas market multiple times. Set against the backdrop of St. Stephen's Basilica, it combines artisan stalls, traditional Hungarian products, and spectacular evening light shows.
Highlights
Nearly 100 artisan vendors offer hand-painted ornaments, honey, paprika, ceramics, and other Hungarian crafts. The basilica facade becomes a canvas each evening when 3D light projections begin, usually around 5:30 PM. The combination of market atmosphere and visual spectacle makes it a must-see for visitors to Budapest in winter.
Food and Drink
As at other Budapest Christmas markets, you'll find kürtőskalács, lángos, mulled wine (forralt bor), and various hot foods. The focus remains on quality and authenticity, with many products coming from Hungarian producers.
Opening and Access
The market typically runs from mid-November through early January, with dates similar to the Vorosmarty Square market. St. Stephen's Square is central and easily reached by public transport; the basilica itself is one of Budapest's main landmarks.
Combining with Other Markets
St. Stephen's Square is within walking distance of Vorosmarty Square and Deák Ferenc Square. Many visitors plan an evening that includes the Advent Basilica light show and a stroll through the Vorosmarty Square market. For a full overview, see our Budapest Christmas markets guide.
