The Christmas market at Vorosmarty Square (Vörösmarty tér) has been a Budapest institution since 1998. Located in the city center at the end of Váci utca, it is widely considered one of Europe's most beautiful Christmas fairs and draws visitors from across Hungary and abroad.
What to Expect
Wooden stalls line the square, selling handcrafted gifts, Hungarian ceramics, embroidered textiles, and traditional ornaments. Food stalls offer kürtőskalács (chimney cake), lángos (fried dough with toppings), goulash, and forralt bor (mulled wine). Live folk music and Christmas carols often fill the square in the evenings, and free train rides are available for children.
Opening Dates and Times
The market typically opens around November 15 and runs through January 1. Opening hours vary by stall; many operate from late morning until late evening. Weekends and the weeks before Christmas tend to be busiest.
Getting There
Vorosmarty Square is easily reached by metro (M1, M2, M3 to Deák Ferenc tér, then a short walk) or by tram. The area is pedestrian-friendly and central to many Budapest attractions.
Nearby Markets
The Vorosmarty Square market is often connected by atmosphere and proximity to the Winter Festival that extends along Deák Ferenc Street. The Advent Basilica market at St. Stephen's Square is a short walk away and offers a different setting with its light projections.
